Share this articleThe annual AUA Summit this year will take place in the capital of Japan – Tokyo
From April 16 to 20, 2025, the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) Summit will be held in Tokyo, gathering representatives from 15 leading universities in Asia. Nazarbayev University (NU) will be represented at this important event by the University President, Waqar Ahmad, Director of the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence, Atakan Varol, and Professor of the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, Prashant Jamwal.
The main theme of this year’s summit will focus on three key areas: challenges and opportunities in higher education, technological innovations, and global sustainability. Specifically, participants will discuss financial sustainability of universities, the role of artificial intelligence in higher education, the contribution of educational institutions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and their role in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. Among the summit participants will be presidents and vice-presidents from universities such as Tsinghua University, Seoul National University, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and University of Tokyo.
NU President Waqar Ahmad will speak at the first panel session dedicated to artificial intelligence in higher education. The session topic will be The Promise and Risk of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education. Participants will discuss how universities can support the responsible integration of AI technologies. President Ahmad will also take part in a working group meeting on the financial sustainability of universities. Meanwhile, Professors Atakan Varol and Prashant Jamwal will participate in a working group discussion focused on the admission of new members and observers to the AUA and will contribute to the discussions on membership issues.
About AUA: The Asian Universities Alliance is a regional cooperation of universities in Asia aimed at strengthening academic ties, sharing knowledge, and conducting joint research. The AUA Summit is an annual event where representatives from the 15 member universities of the Alliance come together. In 2023, the forum was hosted by NU.
